Voice of The Residents

Kicking off the ArtReach GW Community Gallery fall exhibition lineup, Voice of the Residents: Understanding Physical Activity in DC Ward 8will be featured from October 1 - October 31, 2019. The photographs taken by these men represent the strengths and challenges to physical activity in the community. These residents share a valuable perspective that has been historically omitted in the field of population health. This exhibition is the residents’ platform to share their own perspective on physical activity as it pertains to DC Ward 8 culture. More importantly, this collection speaks to the existing strength, untapped potential, and cultural pride of Ward 8 residents that can mobilize them to reclaim their neighborhoods.

Notable Ward 8 landmarks, including Anacostia Park, Frederick Douglass House, and The Big Chair, were widely photographed as cultural drivers of safe and enjoyable physical activity. The design of healthy communities has the potential to build community solidarity, allowing for residents from all walks of life to cross paths. This exhibition is a call to action for all community members, businesses, educational institutions, and public or faith-based organizations to engage in meaningful dialogue facilitated by the collective voice of these men as told by their photographs.

The public is invited to attend the opening reception and visit the gallery during the entire month of October:

Opening Reception: Wednesday, October 2nd, 6 pm - 8 pm

Gallery Hours: Monday through Saturdays from 7 am - 10 pm; Sunday 10 am - 5 pm

Location: Town Hall Education Arts Recreation Campus (THEARC), 1901 Mississippi Ave., SE, Washington, DC, 20020

Admission is free.
